Jovis at the Citadel!!

After nearly completing our first year open for business, Jovis expands into Colorado Springs at the Citadel Mall. On August 29th, 2008, Jovis opened its doors to the great city of Colorado Springs. We could not be more thrilled! The staff is fantastic and the store is gorgeous! Furthermore, we have launched a flavored coffee bean program there and will soon be expanding this to the Montrose site. You will soon be hearing all about the staff and the various happenings at the Citadel. The staff at the Citadel has already created some new drink recipes for the frozen drinks, and they are to die for! Seen above is the front entrance, our newest Jovis Coffee offerings, and a few members of the awesome Citadel crew-- welcome to the Jovis family!

The Chris Mullen Show

The LIVE MUSIC scene is alive and well at Jovis Coffee. As Main in Motion comes to a halt for the year...why doesn't it go all year? Pretty sure that the adults do not mind that there is school the next day. At any rate, at least twice a month you can find some live music at Jovis. Chris Mullen took the spotlight this past Thursday and really showed why he is guitar worthy. With no mic and no amp, he was completely unplugged as he performed a few covers but primarily his own tunes. He'll be back on September 5th. If you did not get a chance to catch him this past week, definitely come on the 5th. If you did see him before, we know you'll be back and we'll save a seat for you.

Business After Hours

Each month the Chamber of Commerce holds a Business After Hours at a Chamber Member's place of business. Combining professional networking with social mixing, this monthly event is always something to look forward to. The Chamber placed a wine bar along with a liquor bar that gave it more of cocktail party atmosphere. The Chamber team was great to work with us and allowed us the opportunity to share the Jovis Story with all in attendance. The food was spectacular, the music energetic, and the guests were wonderful. Thanks goes out especially to the Jovis team who kept the event running smooth and made a great presence for Jovis. Great Job!

All That Jazz from Stevi

We made it through our first festival, was a bit of work and strange weather, but we made it.
The 1st day we got to the Telluride Jazz festival we had some snow and some rain…..fun times ahead I was thinking setting up our vendor site and camp site in the rain. However the rain and snow stopped and we could get things up with out getting too wet.
As we got our tent up and the espresso bar situated we plugged in the espresso machine, test it out let it warm up. We smelt burning…. Yep the espresso machine was not wanting to work. A wire had melted and was overheating or something like that. We got through that. Greg was able to fix it. Woo.
We went into the town and walked around telluride was so beautiful and the music had started in a few restaurant’s and bars. Was a nice feel to the town.
The next morning we got up about seven and made coffee for the V.I.P tent. All that went smoothly and the weather was looking good, people…. other vender’s and the crew were pretty happy that we where there, coffee is what keeps these people going.
Most of the people that worked there were so lovely and seemed to love what they do. Some of them travelled all over with different festivals working and having fun and happy to be meeting, people and loving the music.

I think about 10:30-11 people stared to come in and fill the park and all they seem to want was smoothie’s and more smoothie’s. As the pace picked up so did the music.
Though at times it was a bit awkward getting things done and long hours, working in such a beautiful place and with lovely people made it easy. I think that we all learned a lot here and now know what to do for our next adventure.
The next two days picked up and we always had something on the go. It was tiring and fun at the same time. By the last day we were all dirty, tired and happy with what we had done over all. People got there coffee and smoothies and seemed to love it.
I would love to do something like that again. Now we know what we are doing I think that we could own the next festival.

More views from the Jazz Fest

Are our baristas wearing winter caps?? Yup! Would you believe that it snowed the first night? We all camped out at the park and it got a little bit chilly. Perfect weather for lattes, cappuccinos, and coffee, though! But fair weather prevailed in the end and the rest of the weekend was gorgeous. A few wind gusts that took out a neighboring tent, but espresso machines are on the heavy side so the coffee kept flowing!

To introduce you to our view- check out the view we had from our booth, taken from our Espresso's Eagle Eye view.... What a way to go to work every day!
More details and stories to come from our barista view points--- stay tuned!

Half Way There!

Jovis Coffee...just halfway home to our first anniversary! Since getting all of the baristas together for one shot is a feat in itself, it is only fitting that we acknowledge how appreciative we are of the Jovis Team. Without question, the friendliest, most dedicated, hard working group you will find anywhere. Jovis would not be as successful, nor would have grown so fast without the tremendous talents, unique personalities, and all-around awesome group of individuals. What makes Jovis, Jovis? It's the people.

Farmers Market

Summer must be officially here as the Summer long Farmers Market has begun in Montrose, Colorado. This will be the first season for Jovis Coffee. Since all of our coffees are roasted right here in Montrose, we are able to bring our offerings to the market. This past Saturday had absolutely gorgeous weather-- if every Saturday is like this, it would be heaven. To help keep everyone cool, we also have our smoothies, frappes, and every espresso drink you can imagine available at the market. The folks that work with the city have been very gracious with us. Our espresso machines draw quite a bit of electricity, so in the first two weeks we have managed to trip several breakers, and melt one outlet! When cities design the downtown area, don't they plan for lattes? ;) But everyone has been terrific to work with, and we are thrilled to be there. We can be found every Saturday through the summer from 8a-1p on So. First St. directly in front of City Hall.

Jovis Mobile

Jovis is now mobile! We just got back from a three day weekend at the Montrose Bluegrass Festival, "Pickin'at the Pavillion". We had an absolute blast as there were musicians from all over the region and we were amazed at all of the talent walking around! Individuals would just pick up a guitar and begin playing--sometimes with strangers creating a spontaneous bluegrass jam session. We were able to offer all of our fresh roasted coffees and espressos to attendees and musicians alike. Pictured is our very own Barista, Ashley, insuring that everyone has the energy to enjoy 3 days of great music!

Bring Your Daughter to Work Day

This past Thursday we partnered with Passage Charter School of Montrose to be a part of the National Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Students spend the work day shadowing business leaders/mentors throughout a typical day. Pictured is Passage Charter School Student, Dezaray, learning to pull a perfect shot of esspresso from our Barista Tara.
The day was a success as Dezaray learned from the baristas and the management team about the ins and outs of running a coffee shop and roasting facility on a typical day!

Barista greetings from Africa!

Stevi, one of our multi-talented baristas, has been spending the past month in Uganda, Africa.
Serving as photo journalist for the Missions based project, "Light Gives Heat", Stevi has been documenting the country, the culture and the people.

This email was received today...along with photo. We will have to ask her what exactly is going on in the background when she returns back to us at Jovis! Look closely, and you will see the young girl holding a snake.

Hello !
Hope things are going well over there!
We have been loving it over here and have been busy, though it does not seem like we do a whole lot as it takes the whole day to get one or two things done. It is a different pace here. The filming is hard because I hate having all these camera's in peoples faces, but have learned when I should and should not be filming or taking pictures.
The boys killed a goat yesterday and we had it for lunch. I am glad I was not there to see it. Dillon did get lost of pictures so he could share...yeah it was not pretty.
Anyway send my love to everyone! *Stevi

Latte Magic

The first benefit Magic Show at Jovis was a huge success. Tickets sold out two days prior and we had a standing room only crowd. All of the ticket sales went to the Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club. Three area magicians all lent their talents to present a magic show in three acts. Each magician had a very different style which made this an enjoyable Saturday night for live entertainment. A future show is already in the works for the first part of May. If you are a local or visiting the Montrose, Colorado area, you should not miss the opportunity to grab a latte, espresso, or just pure fresh roasted coffee and enjoy the show!

Magicians on Caffeine

The Magic in March show is all set for this upcoming Saturday. The show is a fund raiser for the Boys & Girls Club. In fact, within the club, the kids had a contest for the best magic trick and the winners will perform at this Saturday's show! To help promote the show, a group of kids came to Jovis on Thursday to create awareness through signs and even performed some tricks for our guests. It must have worked, because the show is already sold out!

As part of their preshow performance and to get some extra practice time, some of the magicians used Jovis Baristas as their audience. Definitely check back after the weekend for pictures of all the acts for this very worthwhile charitable event.

The CLUB

We recently held our first "Club" event. The last Friday of every month we partner up with the Boys & Girls Club to host a live musical or comedy act. Our first event brought in Chris Paul Overall- a Christian Rock artist out of California. He brought an acoustical act and really impressed us. You can find out more about him at his site http://www.chrispauloverall.com/.

After the concert we held an open mic for anyone who wanted try their talents in front of a friendly crowd. The varying types of entertainment coming to Jovis is very important as we try to bring something different to our Montrose Colorado community.

Be sure to stay tuned on our entertainment page to catch all the events at Jovis-- We have Alan Vigil on the 22nd, The Shakespeare Comedy Guys on the 28th, and closing out the month is another fund raiser for the Boys & Girls Club- Magic in March featuring three different styles of magicians.

Hello! Let me start by introducing myself—I’m Tara. I was born and raised right here in Montrose. I am so thankful to have found Jovis and to be part of this growing team! Since the beginning, I have developed a passion for coffee and espresso’s. The passion for excellence at Jovis is very contagious and I am honored to part of the inaugural team! The passion that I refer to is in all the details- the atmosphere, the work ethics, the smiles J, and the discovery of the perfect roast for every one of our offerings! Besides the coffees and the great energy here, the best thing about being part of the team- the other baristas, the owners, and customers. Returning guests are old friends and the first timers allow me to make new ones and share our passion with them. I hope to see you here or through the blog! Ciao! Adios!

Well hi, hello, how are ya? My name is Ashley and I have been here from the very beginning of a wonderful place called Jovis Coffee. It has become my passion as a coffee lover to be around wonderful people and wonderful coffee and here at Jovis, I have found both. I love the attitude, atmosphere and attention to detail that Jovis offers. Passion is a huge part of being alive and learning to live. I believe that without letting one's self come out of your shell, you will never find that passion nor who you really are. Being in a calm comfortable place where you can relax and let that silly, shy part of yourself go, definitely comes into play here at Jovis. Here you can let it all out and just be. Be calm, be comfortable, be you....

Meet another Jovis Barista

My name is Amanda and I love coffee. I love all of the different flavors and aromas that you get from coffee. I previously worked with another company in Montrose that had a small amount of coffee. I needed more! One day a co-worker from that company told me how great Jovis was. I decided to check it out for myself and went down there. I fell in love with the atmosphere, and the coffee. Everyone was so nice there that I decided that I would love to work at Jovis. I have enjoyed myself immensely working at Jovis. It’s great to meet new people, make drinks, listen to our entertainment and chat with our customers. I love making drinks with a lot of foam like a Cappuccino or a Caramel Macchiato. I’m not a big fan of foam on my drink however, so I like to stick with a "wet" Almond Breve.
Jovis doesn’t just have coffees. We also have teas, smoothies and a variety of other drinks. No matter what it is you’re drinking I look forward to hearing from you!

Monthly Cupping at Jovis

Today we held our third monthly coffee cupping at Jovis. We hold these unique coffee tastings on the second Tuesday of every month. Anyone can sign up during the month and then an RSVP invite is sent out. If you are unfamiliar with the coffee cupping process, check out the "Jovis in the News" page on this web site and you will read a really nice article on the subject from the Montrose Daily Press.

Today we sampled Colombia, Kenya, Nicaragua, Kenya, Sumatra, Mexico, New Guinea, and Ethiopia. After all the sniffing and slurping were completed it was great to get all the feedback from the participants. While everyone picked the Colombia bean as one of their favorite, others chose the Ethiopia bean as having a really nice finish. The other one commonly noted was the Sumatra which holds a much darker roast than the Ethiopia. I love to see the varying perspectives on coffee preferences- as the Mexico bean was selected by one as one the favorites and alternatively chosen as one of the least favorites by another. Coffee is a lot like wine in the sense that it will be different for everyone. Each one carrying it's own unique flavor profile. It is up to me the roaster to enhance all the strengths of that bean, while it is up to you, the coffee connoisseur, to determine if those characteristics are appealing to your personal pallete.

Be sure to let us know if you would like to participate in our next cupping!

Introucing our Barista Team!

Hello!
Guess since this is my first entry I should introduce my self.
I’m Stevi and happy to have found Jovis and be working with such wonderful people.
I just moved back to Colorado from the U.K and while I was in college over there I worked for a rather “well known” coffee shop and yeah I had fun, enjoyed my job and it started my interest in the coffee world and let me tell you, it is it's own world and most definitely an art. Jovis definitely have the passion to create the perfect roast to give you something fresh and oh so tasty! I think that was one of the things that made me want to be a part of this team.

I do hope that you enjoy our coffee and coffee talk as much as we do…. Keep checking this space for more info and let this be a place for you to ask us questions talk to us about… whatever we are more than happy to hear from you!

Finally Off and Running

Welcome to the Jovis Coffee Blog Page! To introduce myself, I am the roaster that creates and roasts all of the coffee that comes from Jovis. We decided to create the blog so that our guests and visitors would have an opportunity to ask questions about coffee, roasting, or just to share some ideas that they have discovered.

I will not be the only one contributing to this blog...that would grow rather stale. Each of our Baristas will be offering some insight, answer questions, and even let you "behind the curtain" to the daily goings on at a coffee shop. As you get to know each one, you will see why this team has been gaining a great reputaion locally and each have their own "coffee groupies"!

Be sure to check back often as we anticpate frequent posts and you would not want to miss anything. Now that the formal introduction is out of the way we can begin talking about our common thread.....great coffee!
